Funeral service is a regulated profession that requires licensure in almost every U.S. state. Before beginning your education at AAMI, or relocating during the program, it’s essential to understand the licensing requirements in the state where you plan to practice.
General Licensure Requirements
- Each state has its own laws governing licensure for funeral directors and embalmers.
- Most states require candidates to pass the National Board Exam (NBE) and/or a state-specific exam.
- Some states also require:
- A separate embalming or funeral directing license
- A period of internship or apprenticeship
- Pre-enrollment higher education credits or degrees
Note: If you have a prior criminal conviction, check with the licensing board in your intended state before enrolling. Each state determines whether such a conviction impacts your eligibility for licensure.
If You Move During The Program
Students currently enrolled in AAMI’s associate degree program must remain in a state where AAMI is authorized to provide online education. If you move to a state where AAMI is not approved, you will not be able to continue in the program.
Before relocating, contact:
- The state funeral licensing board
- The state’s higher education agency
They can help determine whether AAMI credits and your degree will be accepted for licensure in that state.

- Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Louisiana, South Carolina: Embalmer-only
- Colorado: Licensure not required; voluntary certification available
- Mississippi: Funeral Service license only
- Illinois: Students must register as interns during their studies
