How To Apply As A Military Or Veteran Student
AAMI proudly supports active-duty service members, veterans, and eligible dependents pursuing careers in funeral service. The steps to apply and receive VA benefits vary depending on your chapter eligibility. Please follow the appropriate instructions based on your benefit type.

Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty
If you paid into the GI Bill® during active duty, you may qualify for Chapter 30 benefits.
Apply For Benefits
Complete VA Form 22-1990 through the Veterans Online Application (VONAPP) website.
Submit Documentation To AAMI
Provide your Certificate of Eligibility and, if applicable, your Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) to the AAMI Financial Services Office.
Verify Monthly Enrollment
Each month, confirm your enrollment through the Wave Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) or by calling (877) 823-2378.
*Benefits are paid directly to the student. If certified on time, the first payment typically arrives the month after the term starts.
Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (VR&E)
For veterans with a service-connected disability rating who qualify for rehabilitation support.
Apply For VR&E Benefits
Complete VA Form 28-1900 and contact your local VA Regional Office to work with a VA counselor.
Provide Authorization To AAMI
Once approved, the VA sends an authorization form to AAMI. Your counselor must be informed of enrollment status changes.
Certification By AAMI
AAMI’s VA Certifying Official will confirm your enrollment with your VA counselor.
Chapter 33: Post-9/11 GI Bill®
For veterans with 90+ days of active duty service after 9/11 or discharged due to a service-related condition.
Apply Or Transfer Benefits
Complete VA Form 22-1990 through the Veterans Online Application (VONAPP) website. For dependents, complete Form 22-190E after your benefits transferred via milConnect.
Submit Documentation To AAMI
Send your Certificate of Eligibility and any NOBE paperwork to the AAMI Financial Services Office.
Understand Your Benefits
Tuition and fees are paid directly to AAMI. Students receive a monthly housing allowance based on the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents, along with a book stipend paid directly to help cover course material costs.
Chapter 35: Survivors’ & Dependents’ Educational Assistance
Available to eligible spouses and children of deceased or disabled veterans.

What To Expect After Certification
Once your enrollment is certified by AAMI’s VA Certifying Official, the VA will begin processing your monthly benefit payments.

Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill® – Selected Reserve
For members of the Military Reserves or National Guard who commit to a 6-year enlistment.

Military Tuition & VA Pending Payment Policy
AAMI complies with Title 38 U.S. Code § 3679(e), meaning students using Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) or Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) benefits can enroll and attend without penalty while payment is pending. AAMI will not delay or prevent your enrollment, charge late fees, or deny access to courses, libraries, or student services.
To qualify, students must:
- Provide a Certificate of Eligibility by the first day of class
- Submit a written request for VA certification
- Supply any additional required documentation
