To help you fund your education and successfully complete your program at AAMI, it’s important to understand what qualifies you for federal financial aid, and how to maintain that eligibility each semester.
This page outlines the core eligibility criteria, application process, and academic requirements that apply to most aid programs.
Who Is Eligible For Federal Financial Aid?
To receive federal aid such as Pell Grants or Direct Loans, students must meet all eligibility requirements set by the U.S. Department of Education. These guidelines ensure that aid is awarded to individuals who are pursuing a recognized degree and maintaining satisfactory academic and legal standing.
Demonstrate The Need For Financial Aid
Most federal aid programs, including the Pell Grant, require applicants to show financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Be A U.S. Citizen Or Eligible Non-Citizen
You must be a U.S. citizen or meet the eligibility requirements as a noncitizen (e.g., permanent resident or refugee) to qualify for federal student aid.
Have A Valid Social Security Number
A valid Social Security number is required, except for students from certain Pacific Island jurisdictions like the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, or Palau.
Be Registered With Selective Service
If you are male and between the ages of 18 and 25, you must be registered with the Selective Service to be eligible for federal aid.
Be Admitted To AAMI’s Associate Degree Program
Only students officially accepted into AAMI’s Associate degree in Occupational studies are eligible to receive federal financial aid.
Be Enrolled At Least Half-Time
To receive Direct Loans, students must be enrolled in a minimum of six credits per semester, which qualifies as half-time enrollment.
Possess A Valid Secondary School Credential
To qualify for aid, you must have one of the following:
- A high school diploma
- A GED certificate
- Documentation of a completed homeschool program that meets state law requirements
Not Be In Default Or Owe A Federal Grant Refund
You must not be in default on a federal student loan or owe repayment on a previously received federal grant.
Applying For Financial Aid
You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each academic year at studentaid.gov.
You will need the following:
- Federal income tax returns and W-2s (yours and your parent’s, if dependent)
- Social Security numbers, birth dates, and marital status (for parent if dependent)
- Records of additional income, such as child support or Social Security
Once submitted:
- You’ll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the U.S. Department of Education
- AAMI will send personalized next steps via email

Repeat Coursework & Financial Aid
You may receive federal aid to repeat a course you passed (A–D) once. Failed or withdrawn courses (F, I, W, WP) may be repeated with aid as long as you remain eligible.
All repeated and withdrawn coursework counts toward your GPA, pace, and maximum timeframe.
